Swedish Food Crafts Championship
This year’s open Swedish Food Crafts Championship was held in Skellefteå in Northern Sweden, beginning of October.
In total, 214 artisan food companies from all over the country competed with over 600 products in different classes in the categories Bakery, Berry, Fruit and Vegetable Processing, Charcuterie, Fish Processing, Craft Beverages, Dairy and Other Artisan Food, which in 2025 consists of Ice Cream & Sorbet and Innovative Artisan Food.
The Swedish Food Crafts Championship has been organized by Eldrimner, which is the national resource center for food crafts, since 1996, and this year the competition products were judged by 24 jury groups consisting of nearly 100 experts and laypeople from different parts of the country and from different professional groups.
Svedjan Ost took home three golds, one silver and two bronzes. Among
other things, they took gold in the new class for coffee cheese, where a
total of ten entries competed, of which five were made from goat’s milk
and five from cow’s milk.
- It is fantastic that coffee cheese is so alive. In general, these
cheeses were of a very high standard, says author and cultural historian
Martin Ragnar, who was chairman of the jury that judged the coffee
cheese, among other things.
Coffee cheese received a so-called protected designation of origin from the EU as recently as this summer. It is to be served in pieces in hot coffee that adds texture and develops the flavor of the cheese.
In addition to the coffee cheese gold, Svedjan Ost also received gold for its cheese Tarsmyran in the pressed cheese or hard cheese class. That cheese was named the highlight of the day by the jury that judged it, even though it shared the gold with another cheese from Svedjan, namely Svedjan Gardsost.
One of the purposes of the competition is to give those who manufacture the products a chance to receive feedback. The products are judged anonymously and each competitor gets to hear the jury groups’ assessment after the competition, both individually and in special seminars.
- Competing is an opportunity to get valuable feedback from the jury’s
experts that can be used in product development. Many competition
participants say that it has given them important keys for the future,
says Aleksandra Ahlgren, Eldrimner
In connection with the competition in Skellefteå, it was also announced that next year’s competition venue will be Kristianstad, where the Swedish Handicraft Championship will be held in the autumn of 2026.
